The 12 Best Weed Killers

Our Top 3 Absolute Favorites:

1. Spectracide Weed Killer Concentrate

I have been using this product for many years. It is highly effective at killing weeds and grasses. I particularly like that it does not burn the plants (it’s very hard to remove burned plants). The best thing about this product is that you can be sure that the chemicals are doing their job. Unlike some products that just make a mess, this one doesn’t poison the soil or water.

The down side is that when using this on larger areas, such as an entire lawn, it may take several applications over multiple weeks to get all the weeds and grass killed. So if you’re looking for quick results, don’t settle for less than two applications. Also, because the active ingredient is concentrated, use only small amounts on large areas. Too much and you’ll simply waste money and run into problems from over-application. For safety, wear gloves and use in a well ventilated area. All the toxic chemicals vaporize easily and so they are quite dangerous to breath.

Be careful how you mix.

2. Spectracide Weed Killer Concentrate

I have been using this product for many years. I do wish it was less expensive but there is nothing cheaper that works nearly as well. It really does work. In fact, when I had a bad grass fire (not my fault), I applied it twice within two weeks and then went out again every month afterwards to keep up the kill rate so the flames wouldn’t continue eating at the base of the plants. Even though the grass never died it slowed down its regrowth which saved me hundreds of dollars in expenses.

After four months of blazing sunshine, the grass is now green. The only thing I can think is that the manufacturer doesn’t want people making a 1 gallon mix especially if they are applying it to large areas. They offer a 5 ounce package that is about ¾ oz per quart of water. This makes enough to treat an entire football field. However, you could make a smaller dilution by mixing half of each bottle into 2 gallons of water to make a total of 10 gallons.

Each gallon being equal to 4 ounces of concentrate, you would need 40 ounces of bottles to get 160 ounces of diluted weed killer. That’s almost exactly what I paid for this stuff last year.

3. Ortho Weed B-gon Chickweed & Clover Killer for Lawns Concentrate

I have been using this product for about 2 years now on my front yard. I apply it at the beginning of the season, during the flowering stage, so that the plants will set seed and continue growth throughout summer and into fall. The area I cover with this product is roughly half an acre and contains many different types of grasses, dandelions, pigweeds, thistles and other weeds. Some weedy areas are very difficult to eradicate even with repeated applications of Roundup. This year I added Bee Balm to my program and also purchased a new type of raking tool which allows me to more easily work the product into the soil. Even though I made improvements, some areas were easier to treat than others.

For example, I could reach down less far to incorporate Beebalm into the soil since it grows so closely to the surface. Also, the newer tools allowed me to rake the product much better allowing me to get into tight spots without having to use my back or knees. Still, treatment was easy and successful. Unfortunately there is no way to guarantee that you will not develop resistance to this product. It’s important to rotate treatments so that you stress the weeds enough to encourage them to become resistant to your product.

5. Garden Weed Preventer + Plant Food – 7 Lb.

I have used this product for years on tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, strawberries, etc. , with wonderful results. I moved some of my strawberry patches into new soil since they had become a bit too thick, but as expected only grew grass which made them useless. Then i tried preening the old soil before adding the new soil & actually saw quite a few new shoots (not many survived the move) so decided to give the weed preventer another shot. and every plant has lived through it.

Even after several very hot days where I usually see no growth at all, not even a leaf, these guys are doing great & I’m seeing lots more green than brown/dead leaves which means healthy growth vs. infection. My recommendations: 1)use both products together whenever possible (strawberry patch used both), 2) be sure to thoroughly soak the area you want to protect making certain that the product is fully dissolved, 3)if using multiple times, space applications should be well apart (like more than twice between applications). The reason I gave it four stars instead of five is because I think the price ought to be higher given how effective it is.

6. Garden Weed Preventer + Plant Food – 7 Lb.

We had been using a hose set on top of the grass with water, which was working okay, but I wanted an alternative that would stop erosion and fungal diseases. Most products are aimed at soil prevention rather than plant health (except those labeled organic), so they include chemicals designed to prevent both insects and fungi from living on or feeding on the treated surface. This product is different; while it includes some fungicides, it also has herbicides. The label recommends using this product only when necessary, and states that repeated applications can be harmful to certain plants. The package directions say to cover the area completely every time, including any underneath, even if there is no new growth.

However, the picture does not look like it will cover much unless you have a lot of space and/or are willing to back off from newer shoots coming up. It looks like it’s most effective when used as a bandage to protect newly growing areas. Because it contains both insecticides and fungicides, it may harm the intended target (plants) more easily than when solely containing herbicides. Overall, I’m satisfied with how well this works, since it combines beneficials without doing anything else. If all you want is something to prevent erosion and keep fungi away, this should do the trick.

7. WeedClear Lawn Killer Ready to Use1 with Comfort Wand

This product works fairly well. I have been using various products like this since I was a kid. They work for me at least most of the time. However, what really sets these devices apart from say an older mulching device, are the instructions that come along with it.

These days people tend to get pretty upset if they can’t read the instructions. So I will give them the benefit of the doubt here. The main thing you should know is that these kill weeds but do not damage your grass. As long as you follow the directions, which include making sure the area is dry beforehand, there should be no problem. Here’s my procedure.

Let’s assume you bought this because your yard is too big and ugly. You also own a riding mower. Don’t use the riding mower until next weekend, when you plan to spend some time killing weeds. Step 1 – Spray the entire area where you want to eliminate the weeds with weed killer. Make sure you spray the base of every stem.

Doing this may require multiple sprays. Step 2 – Wait for about 20 minutes. During this time wait for any bugs to land on the dead stems and then start to crawl around. At this point you can begin to eradicate the bugs. If there are no bugs present after step 2, then Step 3 can be skipped.

It’s up to you whether you choose to proceed. Step 3 – Using either the included wand or hand held, apply the contents of the tube to the base of each plant. Make sure you saturate the base. Then make sure the top of the stem is also saturated. That way when you pull it off later it will fall apart easy. Step 4 – Now comes the fun part. Raise the speed lever on the back of the unit and see how fast you can go.

Again, remember to only increase the speed once. Once you feel like it’s right click onto something you’re good to go. Of course, always wear safety glasses so you don’t end up with whiplash injuries. Enjoy your newfound peaceful existence.

8. WeedClear Lawn Killer Ready to Use1 with Comfort Wand

I have been using this product since I noticed my neighborhood was filled with various weeds that were harmful to my lawn health. The first time I applied it, I didn’t use the recommended spray pattern and ended up giving myself a huge headache. I researched the symptoms of an allergic reaction to this product and found out that it can cause headaches due to the aerosolized particles getting into your eyes and nose. Being smart about these things, I sprayed at the edges of the lawn where the turf meets the concrete, instead of spraying the middle of the yard, so if I had any bad reactions, it wasn’t from my own fault.

Since then, I have learned how to apply the right amount of product based on the conditions of each specific area, and now I don’t experience any negative side effects whatsoever. The weeds are dead, which means less erosion and less damage to my lawn, and the areas that were previously affected by aggressive weeding are also starting to become healthier. Happy customer here.

9. Glyphosate Free Herbicide – Green Gobbler

I have been using this product since I was a child (it’s now almost 20 years later). It used to be made by a chemical company but then it became more expensive so I started searching around to find something else similar at an affordable price. This product works exceptionally well. Here are some key facts:-It is very potent. Just one spray can kill many plants that other products fail to do.

-It also drips down into the soil and seeps into the roots of even tall weeds, killing them from the inside out. -Because it is so potent, it must be applied every few days and it does eventually become ineffective after a while (6 months to a year). But these negative factors are what make it great. -The biggest factor in its success though is that it doesn’t contain heavy metals or synthetic ingredients. Many products on the market contain these things along with formaldehyde and chlorine bleach, which are known to be harmful to health; thankfully this product has none of that.

10. Ortho GroundClear Year Long Vegetation Killer1 Concentrate, Visible Results in 3 Hours

I have been using this product since I bought my house back in January 2020. The past several months have been brutal for my lawn. I’ve been fighting an uphill battle against the local deer population, and now Covid restrictions have only made things worse. But one step at a time.

I started by cutting down some ornamental grass near my driveway, then went about systematically killing all the grass and weeds throughout my yard. I also reseeded some areas where the grass had died, hoping that it would be better competition for the deer. But after applying two gallons of this stuff, I can happily say that there is no longer a hint of green anywhere. I even killed some dandelions close to my backyard fence, which never failed to come back after being burned off last year. And most importantly, I could see results within three days of spraying; whereas before, it took a week or more. So if you’re looking for something effective yet economical, try this out.

You will be amazed at the results.

11. Weed Killer for Lawns, Ready-toSpray

This product is a miracle. I have been fighting with weeds my entire life (the grass one most of us don’t see or care about) and tried every method possible without success. The only thing that helped at all was the Roundup formula. But it didn’t come close enough to rid me of this particular problem.

As much as I would like to say I’m happy to be wrong and am now looking forward to spraying my yard waste free, I know better than that. What I will tell you is this product changed my whole perspective on how to deal with these issues. Here are some tips from someone who has been using this product for years (this isn’t just an opinion but experience). 1. If you spray it correctly, everything dies.

2. Do not apply if windy conditions exist until your next scheduled watering when you’ll also make a thorough inspection of your lawn to ensure no plants are missed. 3. Soak the area thoroughly before treatment starts so the soil can relax prior to being disturbed by the chemicals. 4. Work quickly and avoid direct contact with the treated areas.

In other words don’t eat or sleep near it after it dries because the toxins will remain in your body for a long period of time. They aren’t particularly potent so the risk of harm is minimal, especially compared to what Roundup does which is extremely toxic. 5. Keep track of your expenses because once you get started there’s no turning back unless you’re willing to use more money than necessary. This is costly and should be considered well worth the benefits.

12. Weed Killer for Lawns, Ready-toSpray

I tried this product on my very thickly weeded yard. I bought it with the idea of applying it to the tops of plants which are difficult to reach by hand or with a pullover. It does not seem to be working as well as I had hoped. While most of the weeds have died, there is still an undergrowth that has not been touched by either the herbicide or the weather. And so I will need to apply another round of treatment.

I am disappointed because I expected better results considering the amount of effort I put into its use. Before you buy this product. Yes, it is true what some reviewers wrote about shipping delays and lack of communication after purchase. I did not get a reply from the seller when I complained about these issues. But within 24 hours of complaining, they shipped out a new canister.

So kudos to them for standing behind their product. As far as effectiveness, read other reviewer’s comments carefully. They may be right.
